Synthetic Biology: Engineering, Evolution, and Design Conference Convenes in Atlanta, June 24–27

Bioengineers, researchers, scientists, and industry leaders will explore the use of synthetic biology to address societal challenges at the 2024 Synthetic Biology: Engineering, Evolution, and Design (SEED) Conference. The event takes place June 24–27, 2024, at the Signia Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

Organized by the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) — a technical subsidiary of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) — the SEED Conference presents the latest intelligence in the field, covering synthetic biology from its foundations to its commercial applications. The conference’s expert-led sessions incorporate perspectives from research institutions and industry — highlighting synthetic biology’s applications in medicine, new energy, other sectors.

According to Corey Wilson, the Love Family Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Chair of SEED 2024, the conference exposes stakeholders to synthetic biology’s most recent — and perhaps most important — developments in a single event that covers engineering at the levels of molecules, genes, and cells. “In addition to hearing from experts in the field, the networking opportunities for SEED attendees are immense,” says Wilson. “This is an important growth opportunity for all participants, regardless of career stage.”

Wilson notes that the SEED 2024 conference will mark a quarter century of synthetic biology as a field. He adds that, in addition to hearing from pioneers who helped to establish the synbio discipline, attendees can expect to witness the next generation of developments beyond circuit design and metabolic engineering.

With the SEED conference bringing together synthetic biology’s thought leaders, Wilson encourages all synthetic biology researchers to attend. “Each year at SEED, I meet new researchers, which has resulted in countless new collaborations,” says Wilson. “In addition, the colleagues in my lab always leave the SEED conference more energized, full of new ideas, and ready to take on new challenges.” 

Synthetic biology involves the engineering of organisms to instill those organisms with new properties — permitting new and useful applications in medicine, agriculture, manufacturing, and other areas. Topics at the 2024 SEED conference chart the field’s latest developments, which will be examined in sessions devoted to novel biological circuits, next-generation metabolic engineering, modeling and computational strategies, biomedical applications of synthetic biology, applications of synthetic biology in addressing societal challenges, engineered living materials; and more.
